Abstract

Suicidal ideation is the first warning sign of more serious suicidal behavior. Suicide ideation constitutes but one aspect of suicidal behavior, and is defined as the domain of thoughts and ideas about death, suicide, and serious self-injurious behavior. The present investigation was planned to study predictors of suicidal ideation among police personal. The sample for the study consisted of 202 police personnel (head constable=125, inspector=77) who aged between 24 and 58 years. The subjects were assessed with Neo-Five Factor Inventory, Scale for Suicide Ideation, Occupational Stress Index, and Ways of Coping Questionnaire. Data were processed by correlation and regression analysis. The results revealed that suicidal ideation is significantly associated with personality, occupational stress, and coping among police personal. Step-wise regression analysis identified three predictors of suicidal ideation, i.e., unreasonable group and political pressures, positive reappraisal, and escape avoidance. The results of step-wise regression analysis revealed that the linear combination of unreasonable group and political pressures, positive reappraisal, and escape avoidance account for significant proportion of variance (15%) in suicidal ideation among police personnel.

Abstract

In this competitive world, numbers of activities and pressures for adolescents have increased remarkably. These increased pressures and activities put adjustment problems among adolescents. Self-efficacy can be a potent factor to enhance adjustment among adolescents. The present study was aimed at to see group differences (high vs. low) of self-efficacy with adjustment among adolescents. The objectives of the study are to examine the relationship between measures of adjustment and self efficacy. The sample of the study involved 194 adolescents between the age range of 14 and 16 years. The adolescents were assessed with Bell's Adjustment Inventory (Hindi Adaptation), and Self-efficacy Questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using Pearson's Product Moment method of correlation and t test. For mean comparisons, the sample of adolescents was classified into two extreme groups' i.e. high vs. low (Mean±1 S.D.) on the basis of their scores on self-efficacy and adjustment scores of their respective wards. The results showed that (i) Social adjustment, family adjustment and emotional adjustment was found to be significant negative association with self-efficacy. (ii). the two extreme groups of self-efficacy (high vs. low) showed significant differences on adjustment among adolescents.

Abstract

In the transition period of adolescence, parenting styles (Authoritarian, Authoritative, Permissive and Neglectful) have an effect on behavioral and mental health problems (i.e., adjustment problems, antisocial behavior, depression, psychological distress, etc.) among adolescents. Parenting is a complex activity that includes specific behaviors which work individually as well as in clusters to influence child outcomes. In adolescent's parental involvement, encouragement of psychological autonomy and demand for age appropriate behavior combined with limit setting and monitoring (i.e., Authoritative parenting) contribute to good psychosocial and behavioral adjustment among adolescents. Parenting style has been found to predict the child's well being in various domains such as social competence, academic performance, psychological development, adjustment and problem behavior. Parenting style provide a robust indicator of parenting functioning that predict child welfare being across a wide spectrum of environments and across diverse communities of children. The present paper reviews the impact of parenting style on behavioral problems among adolescents.

Abstract

Aim: The study was designed to measure the seroprevalence of viral and bacterial diseases: Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, bovine viral diarrhea, bovine leukemia, bovine parainfluenza, bovine respiratory syncytial disease, brucellosis, and paratuberculosis among bovine of Himachal Pradesh during the year 2013-2015.
Materials and Methods: The serum samples were collected from seven districts of state, namely, Bilaspur, Kangra, Kinnaur, Lahul and Spiti, Mandi, Sirmour, and Solan. The samples were screened using indirect ELISA kits to measure the seroprevalence of viral and bacterial diseases.
Results: The overall seroprevalence of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis was 24.24%, bovine viral diarrhea 1.52%, bovine leukemia 9.09%, bovine parainfluenza 57.58%, bovine respiratory syncytial disease 50%, brucellosis 19.69%, and paratuberculosis 9.09% in Himachal Pradesh. The seroprevalence of bovine rhinotracheitis, bovine leukemia, bovine parainfluenza, bovine respiratory syncytial disease, and paratuberculosis in the state varied significantly (p<0.01) while was insignificant for bovine viral diarrhea and brucellosis (p>0.01). Multiple seropositivity has been observed in this study. Bovine parainfluenza virus 3 was observed commonly in mixed infection with almost all viruses and bacteria under study.
Conclusion: The viral and bacterial diseases are prevalent in the seven districts of Himachal Pradesh investigated in the study. Therefore, appropriate management practices and routine vaccination programs should be adopted to reduce the prevalence of these diseases.

Abstract

Pasteurella multocida is responsible for major animal diseases of economic importance in both developed and developing countries including India. The prevalence of pasteurellosis has been documented in India as well as in the state of Himachal Pradesh where disease outbreaks from different agro-climatic regions have been reported. Aiming at increased knowledge of these infections in Himachal Pradesh, we employed the conventional methods and advanced molecular methods for culturing, characterization, capsular serotyping, and analysis of virulence factors for rapid epidemiological investigation and pathogenicity of Pasteurella multocida infections in H.P. Vaccine-induced protective biomarkers were also studied using advanced immunological techniques. We also summarize our efforts to enhance the ability to rapidly diagnose clinical infections and to prevent and control pasteurellosis by validation of vaccines.

Abstract

In this study, a total of 57 blood samples from cows and buffaloes showing clinical signs of high fever, anemia and/or swollen lymph nodeswere screened for haemoprotozoan infections using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Some asymptomatic animals were also included in the study. Out of 57 blood samples, 14 samples were positive for either one or the other haemoprotozoa reflecting an overall prevalence of 24.56%. A total of nine samples of which six from cows and three from buffaloes were positive for Theileria annulata and five samples all from cows were found positive for mixed infection of Babesia bovis and Anaplasma marginale. This study shows that haemoprotozoan infections are common in cows and buffaloes population of Kangra District of Himachal Pradeshdue to conduciveenvironmental conditions for survival of vectors responsible for carrying these infectious agents. PCR technique showed high sensitivity and specificityup to species level, as it not only detected the haemoprotozoan infections in active cases but also in asymptomatic carrier animals.

Abstract

Capripoxvirus, belong to Poxviridiae family, cause highly contagious disease of sheep, goat and cattle. Sheep and goat husbandry, mostly migratory type, is practised by many farmers, which contribute significantly to their income. Sheep and goat pox infections are economically important diseases leading to short- and longterm losses to the farmers. A steep rise in sheep and goat pox outbreaks has been recorded in Himachal Pradesh in last few years, therefore, this review summarises recent advances in the epidemiology, pathology and diagnostics of sheeppox and goatpox diseases. This will be helpful in implementing improved disease management strategies in Himachal Pradesh.

Abstract

This study examined the role of maternal parent interactions with child in academic achievement of school students. The purpose of the study was to determine how maternal authoritative, permissive and authoritarian parenting styles as well as parent's child relationship influence the academic achievement of students at high school level. The main objective is to find out predictors of academic achievement among high school students. The total sample (400) for the study involved 200 mothers and 200 high school students between the age range of 14 and 16 years. The parents were assessed with Parent Child Relationships scale (PCR) and Parenting Authority Questionnaire (PAQ-R). Academic achievement score of the students were taken as the average percentage of marks obtained by the students in previous two years in their annual examination conducted by their respective boards/schools. The data were analyzed with the correlation and regression (stepwise). The results showed that (i) authoritarian and permissive parenting style and academic performance have negative correlations. (ii) Parent's child relationships like Acceptance and Realistic Role Expectation have significant positive relationship with academic achievement whereas Carelessness and Lenient Standards have negative relationships with academic achievement (iii). The stepwise regression analysis found four pertinent predictors of academic achievement among high school students, i.e., permissive parenting style, authoritative parenting style, parental acceptance and over protection of parents. All four predictors jointly explained 29.6% of total variance in dependent variable.

Abstract

Sheeppox is a highly contagious disease of sheep causing huge economic losses to the sheep industry and farmers rearing the livestock. Himachal Pradesh has large population of sheep reared by the different rural communities. In recent years, outbreaks of sheep pox have become frequent causing huge economical losses to sheep breeders. Isolation, identification and characterization of circulating Sheeppox virus (SPV) strains is required to initiate efforts for disease control and prevention. The aim of the present study was to establish the best cell culture-based isolation system by comparing the growth of SPV field strains from Himachal Pradesh in lamb testicular (LT) cells and continuous Vero cell line. The results showed that LT cell culture is more suited for primary isolation of SPV field strains as compared to Vero cells. But virus can be adapted to Vero cell line after 5 blind passages. Thus, it was concluded that LT cell culture, though tedious, should be preferred for primary isolation of SPV field strains.
